Commercial Dance statement

What is Commercial Dance?

‘Commercial dance pulls moves from jazz, hip hop, breakdance, popping, krumping, and street dance. Its style will differ depending on the purpose, but generally, commercial dance will include the most popular dance moves of an era and will appeal to the widest possible audience.

Commercial dance is often created with the intention of promoting popular music, a brand, or a product with the intentions of boosting awareness or creating profit for that music, brand, or product.

Commercial dance can be seen in music videos, on television, at nightclubs, in advertising, in cheer team routines, at dance competitions, and more.’

Why Does Project Female Teach Commercial Dance?

Commercial Dance is an authentic component of the lives of the young people that we engage with and is a part of the online world in which they inhabit including TIK TOK, YouTube and Instagram.

Our commercial dance classes are an important part of our youth engagement work. We reference everyday cultural realities within a safe environment which allows young women to express themselves in a body-positive way.

How do we safeguard our dancers?

We confidently underpin all of our activities with a robust understanding of the young people we work with and hold important conversations around empowerment and living shame-free in a society where the issues around consent and the male gaze are omnipresent.

Safe adults who span different generations consistently re-visited these discussions to ensure our young women have access to relevant information and are best positioned to navigate their transition through adolescence with open and honest conversations in a non-judgemental environment.

We promote positive relationships with our female bodies and advocate for celebrating our bodies, prioritising ownership, choice and consent.

  • Empowerment of young women through body-positive movement

  • Clean versions of all music used

  • Absolutely NO misogynistic music

  • Female empowering music tracks with positive messaging about women and their bodies

Project Female has a safeguarding policy and a code of conduct for all adults working with our young people. We prioritise the wellbeing of our young people above all else.

We acknowledge that teaching Commercial Dance to young people can be a controversial area and we are really happy to engage in conversation about the important work that we do with our young people.
